General Studies Elective (certificate in English)

The Certificate General Studies Elective embraces all General Studies lectures in English and is thus targeted at students who would like to both widen their horizon and practice their English skills.

Type and scope of the required course work:

Performance records:

  • Two ungraded certificates of attendance (each 2 CP; one acquired in one of the seminars, the other acquired in the Jean Monnet Circle Seminar);
  • Two graded certificates (each 3 CP; acquired by a presentation throughout the seminar or a written essay). Certificate in total: 10 CP.

Option 1: Across subject areas

Students can choose seminars from the entire General Studies programme and follow their individual interests. The certificate requires participation in three seminars out of three different subject areas of the General Studies programme. Additionally, students are required to participate regularly in the  ‘Jean Monnet Circle Seminar – How does the European Union work?’ (each winter term).

Option 2: Subject focus

(this option will be offered in future. In the winter term 24/25, only option 1 of the ZAK-Certificate General Studies is possible in English. Option 2 is possible in combination with German seminars.)

The General Studies Programme is structured in five subject areas:

  • People & Society
  • Nature & Technology
  • Culture & Media
  • Economy &Law
  • Politics & Globalisation

Students choose one of the subject areas as their focus area and participate in three seminars offered in this field.
Additionally, students are required to participate regularly in the ‘Jean Monnet Circle Seminar – How does the European Union work?’ (each winter term).

Please note: The acquisition of credit points for your key qualifications is not possible in all lectures/seminars listed in the General Studies Programme, but only in the offers marked with ‘SQ’.
These offers are listed here.

In case you are interested in participating in lectures that are not marked with ‘SQ’, please contact the respective lecturer to enquire about the possibility to receive credit points and/or grades.
