On the move. Nowhere at home?
International Scientific Symposium in the course of the 23rd Festival of European Culture in Karlsruhe „Migration. Happiness | Suffering | Foreignness“
22-23 April 2016
What happens to people on the move? How does it affect identities and biographies when cultural, social and political coordinates change fundamentally? How do societies and institutions respond to the challenges of people arriving in order to stay – or wanting to leave again?
The scientific symposium of the ZAK addresses these questions as a closing event of the 23rd Festival of European Culture Karlsruhe “Migration. Happiness | Suffering | Foreignness” from 22 to 23 April 2016.
International experts will focus on current and historical dimensions of escape and migration. They will discuss how mobility influences identities. In short lectures the speakers will elaborate on the various social, cultural and political dimensions of being on the move. Other topics will focus on the localisation of multilocalities and the role of global diaspora societies.
Throughout the symposium, both researchers and field workers will discuss processes of arrival and farewell and other related questions of integration. The two-day public science event looks into the subject from different perspectives. The ZAK invites guests to engage in discussions of these current questions.
